Field trip to Field day

Field trip to Field day

Finnish design has had a lot of success around the world with the beautiful simplicity and functionality it conveys. The same minimal and clean style can be seen on my own photography and graphic design.

I have admired the leather camera straps by Finnish brand Field day ever since I first saw them at Rajala Pro Shop a few years ago. The straps are elegant and seem to be good quality. Field day’s simple brand identity is also visually appealing to me.

Field day logo has been designed by Tomi Leppänen.

When I shoot with Canon DSLR cameras I use CAPTURE camera clips instead of the promotional camera strap included in the box. This spring I got myself a tiny Panasonic LUMIX GM1 mirrorless camera mainly for hobby and didn’t quite like the strap that shipped with this camera either. Once I found the black CLASSIC MINI strap from Field day’s online store I knew it was the perfect match for my orange Lumix!

CLASSIC MINI is made in Sastamala (Finland) from Finnish reindeer leather.

I went to pick up my new camera strap from the Field day studio in Vallila (Helsinki) and met with Iina the founder of the company. The idea for the camera straps came to Iina from her photographer boyfriend Unto. There’s also for example a wallet in the product range by request from a friend. Product development is a continuous process for Iina as she also designs a lot of custom products. Maybe the next product might get inspiration from their dog Helle who appears regularly on Field day’s photos. I know our dog Jack would be thrilled to have a stylish new collar.

The vegetable tanned leather for the RAW model comes from Stockholm (Sweden) and the brass knobs are made in Helsinki (Finland). Iina handcrafts every strap in Vallila (Helsinki).

Unto and Iina share the same workspace. No surprise most of Field day’s photos are shot by Unto.
